There are several ways to qualify for Medicare. The most obvious is to reach age 65 and have worked ten years during which you paid the Medicare tax. You must reside in the United States or its territories.

You can also qualify for Medicare if you are disabled and receiving benefits under Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board. You can also qualify if you have End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or Lou Gehrig’s disease ALS. If you're getting disability income from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board (RRB), you’re eligible for Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance) starting the 25th month you get the benefits. In those cases your enrollment will be automatic.

There are exceptions which may apply to you and you should consult with Medicare about your situation. There isn’t coverage if you are outside the USA or are in jail or prison.
