Two things you want to do for any health exam for insurance is 1) do a fasting blood test (nothing to eat or drink for a 12 hour period before the exam) and 2) complete it first thing in the morning. This will help you get the cleanest numbers.
For example, if you have a donut before an exam, the sugars can make you appear to be diabetic even if you're not because it's raising your sugar levels (creating a spike) for a period. If you have a cup of coffee, the caffeine can raise your blood pressure and may make you look like you have high blood pressure when you may in fact not.
If your numbers come back unfavorably, you cannot simply just retake the exam. Any carrier will review both sets of numbers if you want to redo it and you'll have to pay for the new exam (insurance companies generally pay for the first one). So it's important to get it right the first time, no matter how inconvenient the preparation may be.
Two of the most important things you can do to prepare for your life insurance exam are: 1) don't eat or drink anything but water for at least 8 hours before the exam, and 2) don't take the exam while you are sick. #2 is especially important if you have diabetes, MS, Crohn's, or any other health condition that flares up when you contract a cold or the flu. Even having recent surgery or intense pain can affect blood glucose or hypertension. So just try to schedule your exam when you feel well, if possible, and when you can avoid eating for 8-12 hours.
Some tips to prepare for your paramed exam start a couple of days prior to your exam. First try to schedule your exam early in the morning. It is best if you can fast, no food or water 12 hours prior to your exam. If that is just too long, at least fast 8 hours minimum for your best blood and urine results. Get a good nights sleep prior. You will test better when well rested and early morning is when your blood pressure will be the lowest as well as your weight. It is not a drastic change but sometimes a point or a pound can drop you to the next tier of ratings which leads to lower premiums.
Experts recommend not doing any vigorous exercise 48 hours prior to your exam. If you work out regularly, go light for the 2 days leading up. Exercise can increase proteins, which can lead to false positives on your blood work. If you smoke, try to refrain before your test, as it can elevate your blood pressure. If you smoke an occasional cigar or pipe, you need to be 14 days clean in order to get the cotine out of your blood stream. A few life insurance carriers will give you nontobacco rates for occasional use, but you must test nicotine and cotine free to receive these rates. Underwriters test for cotine because it stays in your system 14 days longer than nicotine.
