Original Medicare has a list of preventive screenings that it will cover under Part B. However, the cancer screening list does not include HPV testing as a covered screening test for cervical cancer.
What Medicare does cover is one PAP test and pelvic exam every 2 years if you are at average risk for cervical cancer. If you are considered at high risk and have had an abnormal PAP test in the last 3 years, Medicare will cover it once a year. The tests will be covered at 100% if your doctor accepts assignment (accepting the Medicare-approved amount as payment in full). If he/she doesn't accept assignment, you would be responsible for any excess charges the doctor bills you for (an amount above and beyond the Medicare-approved amount, up to 15%) - you may want to look into buying a Medicare supplement plan F or plan G to cover excess charges (plans F & G cover excess charges at 100%).
