My apartment complex is telling me I have to add them as a co-policy holder on my renter’s insurance. This seems odd to me. Shouldn’t they have their own insurance?

The landlord can require that they be named as an additional insured.  Most companies do not charge anything for his extension of coverage.  It merely clarifies that if someone sues you and the landlord simultaneously that the policy will provide the primary defense.  Normally, the concern of the landlord is in the concern over legal action.
