You need to understand the difference between an agent and the broker.  An agent typically works for one company, therefore can only quote the products that company has available.  On the other hand, the broker has the ability to "shop" around to find the right fit for the coverage you are looking for.

Once you decide who you want to work with, then you can start the process to find the right company, the right product with the right premium to fit your budget.

Who to talk to about life insurance will partially depend on your age, health, and the type of policy you need. If you have a health condition such as diabetes or heart disease, it is helpful to contact an agency that specializes in impaired risk. If you are over the age of 60, you may want to contact an agency that carries many choices for seniors. And if you need permanent coverage, you will want to avoid agencies that only sell term insurance.

The purchase of life insurance is a personal matter.  My suggestion is to ask your colleagues, neighbors and friends for a recommendation.  Make sure you are comfortable with the agent.  Make sure the agent is honest with you and with the company that is represented.  Listen carefully to the advice the agent gives.
