Some reasons why life insurance is denied:

    1) You applied for a policy for which you do not qualify due to a medical condition, being overweight or underweight per the policy guidelines, or are out of the age limits of the policy.

    2) You are not a US citizen or do not have a green card or work visa.

    3) You do not have any income coming in and do not qualify for the face amount for which you applied.

    4) Your doctor did not provide the medical records requested by the underwriter.

    5) Your blood test showed very high glucose or cholesterol or elevated blood pressure.

    6) You never heard back from the agency that took your application, possibly not being able to provide essential information requested by the life insurance company that would have been simple to give, had you known.

To avoid declines, contact an agency that will provide good customer service and also put you with the right policy to start with. Many declines are avoidable.

Life insurance is a policy that your money pays for but your health is what buys it.  The healthier you are the better the rate.  As health issues surface we go down the line of insurability until we finally cannot be approved for anything but a guaranteed issue plan.  Companies will look at the whole picture.  For example, a person with controlled high blood pressure and no health issues may get standard rates.  A person who is overweight and has high blood pressure may receive a higher rate than standard and a person who has high blood pressure,is overweight, smokes, and is on heart medication may be declined.  A good life insurance agent can help you find an affordable plan and help guide you.

I find that the number one reason why people get declined for coverage is poor control. They can have a legal, criminal, financial, or motor vehicle issue. They can have abnormalities on blood tests. They can have a crazy lifestyle in which they climb mountains, race cars, or dive 300 feet into the ocean.

They can even have a history of cancer, diabetes, or heart disease. The fact of the matter is that some life insurance company would probably want to make them an offer. (Of course, it would also want to slap them with some extra premium.)

BUT: Control is key. There must be compliance with a prescribed regimen. Safety procedures must be in place with lifestyle issues. They must appear like a stable person with regards to how they run their life and treat themselves. That tilts the odds heavily in their favor.
