The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1986 (COBRA) stipulates that generally one can continue group health insurance benefits for 18 months.
There are certain circumstances that may allow an individual to extend this period. Generally this would be a disability certified by the Social Security Administration. If one is eligible for extended benefits beyond 18 months, the extended time period is up to 11 months and the insurer can increase premiums to 150% of the original premiums charged during the extension.
