    You select who your life insurance goes to. That person is called the beneficiary. When you insure your life, you choose who you want the death benefit of your life insurance policy to go to. The primary beneficiary or beneficiaries are first, then if they are not alive, the contingent beneficiary or beneficiaries will receive your life insurance proceeds.
