If prescribed as reasonably and medically necessary, Medicare covers home health care in the following ways:
1. Skilled nursing care
2. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology services
3. Medical social services
4. Medical supplies
It will not cover 24 hour per day care or homemaker or personal care services, if those services are the only care needed and not necessary for one's plan of care.
If the doctor has ordered Home Health Care Medicare will cover those expenses 100%. If you hire someone to provide Home Health Care you will be responsible for the cost of the care. Your doctor can only order Home Health Care for specific medical reasons and the nurse will only perform the medical services specified in their orders. If you need ongoing help with activities of daily living Medicare does not provide that type of Home Health Care.
