There are many kinds of life insurance policies, some harder to get than others. At our office, we start with the hardest to get (least expensive) and work our way through the choices until we find the best price and policy for which our clients will qualify. In states that offer it, guaranteed issue life insurance is the easiest to get, and most expensive. But it also has age limitations, so not everyone can get it.
Not counting guaranteed issue life insurance or simplified issue life insurance (both good options for those who cannot get anything else), here are some things that could keep you from getting medically underwritten Life Insurance:
1. A serious health condition that is not, or cannot be, controlled.
2. AIDS or HIV positive
3. Drug or alcohol treatment in the last year
4. Current or recent felony or probation
5. Cancer, heart attack or stroke within the past year
6. Having had some tests done to determine if you have a health condition, with the results not yet back. Or a surgery coming up shortly; most companies will postpone until the surgery is over.
7. Not having US citizenship, work VISA or Green Card
8. Suspended drivers license
9. Cognitive impairment
10. A child under 20 with a serious health condition, whether controlled or not
11. Being in a wheelchair and/or needing assistance to do activities of daily living such as dressing or bathing
12. Being on oxygen or dialysis
13. Being diagnosed as terminally ill
Again, there are options for most situations, even those above, if you get the right type of policy. An agency that understands impaired risk underwriting, and that carries many different types of life insurance, is your best bet for finding a policy when you have a challenging health or risk history.
