There are companies that are online based, so I believe that you can purchase some coverage online. You may still be required to meet with a company representative to sign paperwork and so they can verify the information that you provided about your vehicle and get copies of your prior insurance documents.

If you desire to act as your own insurance broker by all means feel free to do so. Just be aware that auto insurance is not something you can get from a vending machine. If there is a pro blem at claim time, it is you versus the insurance carrier. Just try asking the online company for a specimen policy that you can examine - chances are you will not get one. Even if you did, can you read an insurance policy and understand it? Insurance policies are legal contracts. Even after 43 years in the insurance business (reading policies) I learn new things almost every day. Find a competent knowledgeable agent or broker who actually reads and understands the policies they sell. They also should ask you many questions to determine your situation and advise the policies and coverages that best fit your needs.
