What happens at a life insurance exam depends on your age, the life insurance company, and the face amount of the policy for which you are applying.

If you are young and applying for a small policy, it is possible that all that is needed is answering of medical questions, or a urinalysis along with that.

For most people that apply for a medically underwritten life insurance policy, a blood and urine sample are taken; measurements, weight, blood pressure, pulse, etc are taken; and health questions are covered.

For middle aged to senior persons, a resting EKG may be added. For very large face amounts, the requirements may add include a treadmill EKG for older persons, or possibly a full exam by the applicant's physician.

They take your height, weight, blood sample and urine sample potentially, then go over a few simple questions regarding your health. If you may have indicated that you were a smoker until relatively recently (quit within the year) on your application, then perhaps a mouth swab will be taken to verify that you have, indeed, ceased smoking. Obviously, the more experienced the examiner the quicker and more hassle free the process/
