When actuaries assess the possibility of a claim they arrive at a “standard” premium. When you have a claim you move into a slightly higher risk group and the company will generally—not always, assign a rating factor to your policy. These increases generally are only applied for a limited period of time (3 yrs. is common.) Another issue is that a claim may disqualify you to receive a “claims-free discount” which many companies offer. The combination of losing a discount and an increase in the rate can make for a sizeable premium increase.
