Homeowners Insurance does cover Swimming Pools as 'Other Structures' which is usually 10% of the Dwelling Coverage amount on the policy. A swimming pool is covered for the same perils that cover the home.

The most common covered claim for a swimming pool would be a liability claim or medical payments claim for a slip and fall injury; some insurance carriers will not insure a home with a pool if there is a diving board or slide in order to avoid this risk.

One of the more common questions regarding a swimming pool is coverage for cracks in the pool. Cracks are usually caused by land movement or earthquakes; this is not covered on a homeowners policy. Earthquake coverage would need to be purchased to cover this sort of damage to a swimming pool; however, the deductible and special limits will apply to swimming pools.

Please review your coverage details prior to purchasing coverage.

If a pool is damaged due to a covered peril there may be coverage. For example a tree falls on the pool. It will also cover liability if someone gets hurt or drowns in or around the pool. Make sure your agent knows you have a pool and make sure it is properly fenced according to the insurance companies standards however. If you don't and the company inspects it, you may face non-renewal. Most companies require some type of fence around a pool.
