May depend by State or plan. Unless excluded specifically by some insurance companies' plans, car insurance usually covers anyone using the vehicle with permission, including spouse and dependent relatives. But there may be limitations on certain first party coverage (Personal Injury Prot, Physical Damage) for "licensed household resident members". Any "licensed household resident member" must be stated on the application for insurance (a sister, brother, grandma, uncle, FRIEND, significant other etc..). If not, and that person ins involved in an accident, carrier will most probably deny claim. Insured may sign an exclusion if they don't want "Granny" to be included, but is "Granny" then is involved in an accident, there will be problems.
