It is possible, especially if the reason that you were pulled over is compounded by the fact that you are driving without insurance. At the very least, doing so will increase the amount you will have to pay for the ticket. Remember that maintaining continuous coverage is a requirement in most states. Not having it can in many cases result in your registration being suspended. Now, if you are pulled over and have no insurance AND a suspended registration, I think you can plan on having your car impounded.

Great question! I hope that you never have to find out. I know for a fact that some Police Departments will impound, if you are driving without insurance and are stopped. (I had a family member who learned that the hard way.) They are less strict if you have insurance, and just don't have proof, but either way your record and insurance premium are going to take a serious hit. So will your wallet. Please do not drive without insurance, if not for yourself, then for the other person that you may hurt or kill. Thanks for asking!

Can police impound your car for no insurance? This is probably going to be a decision made locally and there is nothing in the Constitution that would say they cannot and the more severe your driving record cetainly the higher the chance. If you have been stopped or had a violation especially DUI then the higher the possiblity and the bail on that car is probably going to be so high you will not be able to afford it. You know yu are required to have insurance so why would you fight the law? You know you cannot win this fight.

Police at their discretion could impound your vehicle for operating the auto on the road with no insurance. Most of the time you will just receive a citation and be sent on your way but I have known clients who felt it was their duty to tell the officer why he is wrong and there you go. Impounded.
